My 4 Step Daily Practice to Connect with God
Connect with God through a simple four-step practice that can align your goals, daily life, and heart with God’s guidance and presence.
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and
unsearchable things you do not know.”
Jeremiah 33:3
It Began Here
I sat on my couch, journal in hand, the morning after a four-day weekend with my two coach friends. Every year, we meet at one of our homes for a long weekend. It’s our tradition: we attend a two-day coaching mastermind and then spend time debriefing what we’ve learned. We share our business goals, dream for the year ahead, and brainstorm with each other.
For six years, we’ve met weekly, and what started as business-focused has transformed into something much deeper. God has taken the center stage.
During our weekend, I shared something that had been pressing on my heart: How can I reach my goals while building a routine to hear from God? I didn’t just want to check boxes on my to-do list; I wanted a way to blend my business, family, and volunteer work into a life that flowed from my time with God.
One of my dear friends introduced me to a four-step practice that she’d been using. She had adapted it from her mentors, and together, we tailored it to fit my life. That morning on the couch, I began my journey with this process.
Here are the four steps:
1. Review Your Desires and Goals.
I began by listing out my desires—a surprisingly challenging exercise. Writing them down helped me see the dreams God had placed in my heart while identifying ones that needed refining.
2. Ask God to Remove Anything That Is Not From Him.
I prayed, asking God to swiftly remove any desires that were not from Him. It was a moment of surrender, trusting that He knows what’s best for me.
3. Ask, “Pertaining to Today, What Do You Want Me to Know?”
As I paused in the stillness, I felt God’s presence. He spoke words of encouragement to my heart: “I do use you. I am speaking to you. I’m right here.”
In my Bible reading just this morning, I read Job’s response, “Though they slay me, I will hope in him.” Job 13:15 God wants me to know my hope is in Him alone. Another version says trust. My trust is in Him alone.
It encourages me to see His attributes. To be reminded of His greatness. To combine all of me, my life, my business, my Bible reading, and pause to listen to Him.
4. Ask, “What Do You Want Me to Do?”
Again, I waited and heard Him say: “Do this regularly. Enjoy me. It’s not about rules.” These words reminded me that this practice wasn’t about perfection but about relationship.
After this, I spent time reading my Bible, following the plan I’m currently using.
I’m encouraged by how God shows me things in many areas all at once. At church we are starting the book of Daniel. The key verse in Daniel 2:20-22 says,
Daniel answered and said:
“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
to whom belong wisdom and might.
21 He changes times and seasons;
he removes kings and sets up kings;
he gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to those who have understanding;
22 he reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what is in the darkness,
and the light dwells with him.
The more I practice this routine, the more I realize it’s not just about achieving goals—it’s about becoming the person God has called me to be. It’s about focusing on who He is and His attributes and trusting and surrendering to Him more and more. This involves the work he has called us to do. Our job, ministry, motherhood, and desires and goals.
In His Word
God longs to speak to us when we quiet our hearts and listen. Jeremiah 33:3 promises, “Call to me and I will answer you.” What if today you paused to ask Him, “What do you want me to know?”
In Your Life
Consider starting your own morning routine to hear from God. Begin by listing your desires, surrendering them to Him, and asking those two simple questions: “What do you want me to know?” and “What do you want me to do?” Then, read His Word and trust His guidance for your day.

Try journaling your responses to God during your quiet time. For inspiration, read Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer, a practical guide to hearing from Him. This version is a Bible Study with video access to Priscilla’s teaching.
