Our Call to Seek the Lord

When You said, “Seek My face [in prayer, require My presence as your greatest need],” my heart said to You, “Your face, O LORD, I will seek [on the authority of Your word].”

Psalm 27:8 AMP

Could it be that our restlessness and lack of satisfaction in life is a result of our disobedience to God’s instruction to seek Him first?

God’s people tend to complicate what He has made simple. At the cost of our peace, we are easily distracted by the pursuit of lesser things when He has told us to put Him first. One of the most beautiful things about God’s presence is that it is not limited to specific places or perfect moments in our lives. He is always near and always available, so we can continually dwell in Him. We are called to abide in Him—our light, our salvation, our refuge and fortress.

Seek Him First

“Seek Him first” is not a cliché; it is an instruction spoken with intention, which leads to a life of true fulfillment and satisfaction. Seeking Him should not be viewed as an obligation to God but as an honor and opportunity to grow in our knowledge and understanding of Him.

I have recently asked myself these questions and would challenge you to do the same: What have I desired more than His presence? What have I sought more than His face?

Then, ask Him to tear down those idols in your life and return you again and again to the simple and sincere pursuit of Him above all else.

His presence is more important than anything else that desires your attention. Pursuing Him first will cause the rest to unravel according to His perfect plan and purpose for your life.

Our lives should reveal that He is both our greatest need and desire. Live in obedience to His command to seek Him first, for He is where peace, purpose, and joy are found.

In His Word

Look to the LORD and his strength;

seek his face always.

1 Chronicles 16:11

In Your Life

Why is it important to seek Jesus first? What (if anything) have you put before seeking Him? What fear, anxiety, or worry does the truth from today’s devotional replace?

Jesus, help me to seek You before anyone and anything else. Let my life be evidence that You are both my greatest need and desire. Amen.
