God is Looking for Women Who Are Faithful to Him
What does faithfulness look like? If faith is believing God is who He says He is and He’s going to do what He says He’s going to do, then being faithful to Him means we walk in those beliefs. We walk as if God is God and His promises will come to fruition.
The Bible has stories of faithfulness woven throughout it. Two specific women were chosen by God for very specific purposes.
Rather than just reading a story, we’re looking at responses and exchanges and seeing the faith (or the doubt!) unfold as God calls a couple of women to be part of something way bigger than themselves and their circumstances!
Elizabeth and Mary Specifically Chosen
Consider Elizabeth: she is well in age and yet God uses her to bear a prophet who would give knowledge of salvation to God’s people and give light to those in darkness. That was his purpose, and Elizabeth’s was to bore him to do so.
And Mary: Let’s be honest. If God {through an angel} came to you as a young girl, probably a teenager, who had not yet been fully wed (aka had intimate relations) and told you that you were going to have a baby…what would be YOUR reaction? Let’s add to it that you’re told you’re going to bear the Savior of the world.
In Luke 1:6, it is pointed out that Zacharias and Elizabeth were “righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless”.
In Luke 1:28 Mary was called “highly favored one” and “blessed among women” by the angel.
They were chosen because they lived righteous lives.
They were chosen due to favor and their faithfulness to God, not merely because they were willing.
Willingness Isn’t Considered
What I find interesting also, is that they were never asked if they wanted this choosing. They were told exactly what was going to happen.
Luke 1:13:
“Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.”
Luke 1:31:
“Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.”
These two women shared a faith, a strength, and favor with God to do the impossible. They didn’t complain that it was inconvenient or didn’t fit within their dreams or plans. God wasn’t asking.
They both thanked God and praised Him for His goodness. Their passion for God overshadowed everything else. One wasn’t jealous of the other, but they were blessed by each other!
They were humble women. They didn’t think more highly of themselves than they ought to. (Romans 12:3)
The Favor of Faithfulness
The most amazing thing to me is the faithfulness of the women God chose to walk out His plan. God chose them because they were faithful to Him.
What does it look like to be faithful? According to the above verses, it means living a righteous life, walking out His commandments, and trusting Him.
Mary and Elizabeth were faithful and highly favored by God despite living under the Law.
