Use THIS 9-Step Process to Accomplish Any Goal
Last fall my sister and I were talking on the phone. I had mentioned that I wanted to create a course to help overwhelmed women get organized and feel confident about managing their homes. But…
I didn’t know HOW to create a course and it was all so overwhelming.
I specifically remember whining telling her – It’s so much work. What platform do I use? I don’t have all the equipment. I don’t know how to edit videos. The website stuff is so complicated. I’m not good at technical stuff. Blah, blah, blah.
Then, I learned what I’m about to share!
THIS process changed my life.
I used this process in the spring of 2018 to create the course content and trial it with a group of 60 women.
The fact that I accomplished that blew my mind.
Over the summer I planned to prepare the course to sell but I indulged in overwhelm again. Nothing got done with this project for three months.
Finally, I decided to sit down and go through this process to complete the goal.
Here are the exact steps I took and the exact steps you can take to complete any project or goal.
I’ll use my specific example but substitute your own project, dream, or goal.
Remember to bathe your project and this process in prayer. Give it to the Lord before you start.
1. Draw a picture. (Yes, really!)
Get a piece of paper, lay it horizontal, and draw a stick figure on the left edge. This is you now.
Next, draw a stick figure on the right side. That is you with your goal complete.
Write your goal by the stick figure on the right.
2. Write down all tasks.
On a separate sheet of paper, make a list of all the tasks you need to do to complete your project. Be specific.
Mine included: Edit videos, get units edited, upload units, create worksheets, write copy, make graphics, record introduction, edit intro, record bonus material, create sales page…
3. Write down all obstacle thoughts.
The obstacles are the thoughts keeping you from reaching your goal or completing your project.
This was huge for me to see!
It wasn’t the tasks alone that were keeping me on the left side of my paper.
It was the thoughts I was thinking.
Draw circles or dashes between the two stick figures and write in your obstacle thoughts.
Here were some of mine:
- It takes so long to edit the videos.
- I don’t have time.
- Should I use a landing page or not?
Do not skip this. Add every obstacle thought you can think of. (I had a lot more.)
4. Solve all obstacle thoughts.
Brainstorm solutions. Figure out how you will overcome each thought. Write all the steps to overcome each obstacle.
- It takes so long to edit the videos. {I’ll give myself 1.5 hours each. They don’t have to be perfect. Set a timer to stay focused. Schedule each one. Improve as I go.}
- I don’t have time. {I do have some time on my calendar. Get out my calendar and look at it to see exactly what time I have available – instead of avoiding my calendar and thinking I don’t have enough time.}
- Should I use a landing page or not? {I’ll spend 1 hour looking at landing pages. Give myself 5 minutes to decide. Don’t second guess myself. Support myself in my decision.}
Add any tasks you created in this step to your task list. Mine were researching landing pages, make decisions, schedule…
5. Prioritize tasks.
Look at the task list. Number the tasks in the order you want to complete them.
6. Write amount of time to complete each task.
I could say, “It will take me all year to create the course.”
I could say, “I don’t know how much time it will take me to do a task.”
But, what I do know is that it’ll take me however long I give myself.
Don’t get stuck in indecision. Just assign an amount you think it will take and plan to get it done in that amount of time. Period.
Here’s my example:
Edit videos (1.5 hrs each), get units edited (30 min), upload units (25 min each), create worksheets (30 min each), write copy (1.5 hours), make graphics (2 hours), record introduction (30 min)…
7. Schedule all tasks.
Get out your calendar and write each task as an appointment.
Once EVERY task is scheduled in your calendar, throw away the task list.
Yep. No more overwhelming lists. Just appointments on the calendar.
Everything is scheduled.
This project is as good as done.
8. Keep all appointments.
When the appointment comes up on your calendar, you “go to work!”
These appointments are like gold. DO NOT miss them.
Keep the appointment and get the task done in the allotted time.
Even if you don’t feel like it.
Even if your brain brings up all the reasons why you shouldn’t.
Redirect your brain to an intentional thought.
Mine was, “I choose to create a course that will help women manage their home with confidence…and I won’t stop until I do.”
9. Celebrate.
GREAT job! Celebrate your accomplishment. Praise and thank the Lord.
